Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes

Book Title: The Winter King

Author: C.L. Wilson

Narrator/ Available in audio: Heather Wilds

Part of a Series: Weathermages of Mystral, Book 1

Genre: Fantasy Romance

Cover Art: The cover art felt very old-timey romance to me. But def got some fantasy vibes.

Synopsis: After three long years of war, starkly handsome Wynter Atrialan will have his vengeance on Summerlea's king by taking one of the man's beautiful, beloved daughters as his bride. But though peace is finally at hand, Wynter's battle with the Ice Heart, the dread power he embraced to avenge his brother's death, rages on.

Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of Storms, has spent her life exiled to the shadows of her father's palace. Reviled by her father, marriage to Wintercraig's icy king was supposed to be a terrible punishment, but instead offers Kham her first taste of freedom—and her first taste of overwhelming passion.

As fierce, indomitable Wynter weathers even Khamsin's wildest storms, surprising her with a tenderness she never expected, Kham wants more than Wynter's passion—she yearns for his love. But the power of the Ice Heart is growing, dangerous forces are gathering, and a devastating betrayal puts Khamsin and Wynter to the ultimate test.

Favorite Line in the Book

Shani:

Khamsin had no intention of letting any man, husband, king or the sun god himself stake her out on a glacier and leave her to die.

There was no waiting, no long drawn out pleasure, only driving need and hunger…

Bridget:

“If ever again you consider deceiving me or harming anyone under my care, remember today,” Wynter advised in a voice of pure ice. “And consider this also: I will now do everything in my power to ensure that Khamsin’s child—the child of the daughter you loathe—will be the next ruler to sit on the Summer Throne.”

Disappointing. That's the best word I can come up with to describe my feelings towards this book. I expected something epic and fantastical, in the same vein as the Tairen Soul series. What I got was... not that.

The plot is great - that's the saving grace here. The characters are shit. I hated the heroine. I hated the hero. I hated all the various villains. I even hated the secondary characters that only had a few lines. They were all shitty people that do shitty things and it was just shit. SHIT, I TELL YOU.

The villains were good villains, in the sense that they were horrible and I wanted them beaten as violently and as painfully as possible, but they were insanely predictable. Boooring.

This started out so strong and I was enjoying the plot, all because of the forced marriage trope tho, but then it started dragging and things were just so repetitive. The entire book is filled with them not trusting each other and throwing accusations. They just didn’t give me a chance to connect with both of them. Even at the very end both the main characters were still throwing accusations of betrayals at each other! The world building was good and some parts were really enjoyable tho. I think I just came here for the romance, but it wasn’t that memorable. Still it was just okay.
