Sadly, we are swiping left
We were super hyped to read this book, because it was so hyped up and had such great reviews everywhere. Unfortunately, this book really missed the mark for us and we really broke down why.
Some major points we discussed:
Rhiannon is super rigid & never gives anyone the benefit of the doubt except her best friend
The fact this seemed to be based on the creator of Bumble.
How there was wayyyy too much information about the business and CTE in this book.
Verbal consent & condoms, how much is too much
Rhiannon asking “Can I take you in my mouth” that is not modern and was super weird
Rhiannon on the talk show towards the end, best scene of the book

Shani: Great cover art! I was excited to see brown girl and guuuuuuurl I do love me a Samoan!
Bridget: I liked the cover art. It felt light and fun, let me know that it was about modern dating and finding love on a dating app and the colors were super bold. Also, showcased that the main couple is people of color.
Synopsis: Rhiannon has created a dating app that is revolutionizing the way romance works in the digital age, the only problem, she never swipes right on love in her own life. Until she meets former pro-football player Samoan Lima. They have a sweet and sexy night together and then he ghosts her without a word.
Rhiannon has written him off completely until he steps back into her life in the most unexpected way, working with her business nemesis.
Can they get past broken trust and misunderstandings?
Heroine Rating: Rhiannon
Shani: 🍑 She annoyed me. She found angst where she didn’t need to and reminded me of a 14-year-old.
Bridget: 🍑🍑 I liked that she was a badass businesswoman and loved her friends so much, but I also get super annoyed when characters immediately jump to the worst conclusions about people they are either dating or intimate with and don’t let them explain. Happened more than once in this book.
And her success at all costs attitude was couched as empowerment, but was actually a defense against prior trauma and not empowered until the very end when she realizes she doesn’t have to buy the other company, they can become partners and she can evolve while still making mad cash and being a badass.
Hero Rating:
Shani: 🍆🍆🍆 He was willing to put in the work, but he didn’t give me sexy energy.
Bridget: 🍆🍆 Hmm… So I liked that he was willing to pursue her at her own pace and without any complaint was willing to alter his words or behavior (as with her nickname Rhi vs using her full name Rhiannon). He didn’t make her feel bad or dismiss how upsetting it was for her. Major points for that.
I think my main problem, was this book as a whole for me was pretty blah, so it’s hard to get super behind the heroine or hero.

Great story, odd narrator choice
This was a great contemporary romance and I really appreciated the diversity of the characters but I was a bit disappointed that the narrator for Rhiannon isn’t a Black woman. I’m not sure why this choice was made and Summer Morton did a great job, but the story and character felt less authentic. It also made the importance of having a Black woman be the main character and fall in love feel sort of tainted. Otherwise I loved the book and really appreciated this modern love story! Wish I had read it instead of listening to the audiobook.

Bridget: ⭐⭐ No. She has written other books that her readers have enjoyed, so I would be down to try a different one, but this missed the mark for me.
