Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes
Book Title: A Promise of Fire
Author: Amanda Bouchet
Narrator/ Available in audio: Mia Barron
Part of a Series: Book #1 of kingmaker chronicles - FYI there isn’t a full HEA at the end of this book
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Cover Art: I like that it is a woman of color as the badass on the cover.
Synopsis: Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods-and her homicidal mother-have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.
Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short and lived alone.
Favorite Line in the Book:
Shani:
His hand is powerful and spanning half of my back it makes me think about the time we brawled. The restraint he must have shown to keep from snapping me in two. Especially when I deserved it.
Bridget:
“What do you expect when you keep her tied up? Tied to you?”
“I’d had enough!”
“She’s had enough!” Flynn thunders.
“Whose side are you on?” Beta Sinta thunders back.
“Fix her!” Flynn roars.
“I don’t know how!”

My biggest problem with this book was that it started to become so stale so fast. After the surprises and action of the first third I was hoping for more and more. Unfortunately I felt that the next two thirds just started to unravel and by the end of the book I still feel like the characters weren't genuine or exciting and they had lost a lot of the potential I think they could have had. I'm always sad when I read a book that starts off so well and then loses momentum, but for me I just feel like that is what happened. Of course we also can't ignore the fact that our main character's love interest (if you could call him that) is a flipping kidnapper and jerk for a LOT of the story, and then there's an inexplicable (and kind of unacceptable) 180 on that... Not really what I would call a solid basis for a relationship!
